Černošský policista Gabriel Bird je odsouzen na doživotí za vraždu kolegy. Je pravdou, že bílého policistu zastřelil, ale jen proto, aby zabránil vraždě nevinných během razie. Po několika desítkách let je Gabriel propuštěn a může si konečně dopřávat radosti ze života „venku“, zároveň je ale konfrontován se zcela odlišným světem, než znával. Najde si bydlení nad kavárnou paní Josephiny, s níž se po čase velmi sblíží a díky svým zkušenostem přijme práci soukromého očka pro právníka, který se podílel na jeho propuštění.
