Dizide Afrika'dan köle olarak Amerika'ya kaçırılan ve bir çiftlik sahibine satılan Kunta Kinte'nin (Malachi Kirby) dramatik hikayesi anlatılmaktadır. Sahibi tarafından "Toby" adı verilen Kunta Kinte özgürlüğüne düşkün bir adamdır. Defalarca kaçış planları yapmış ve en sonunda köle avcıları tarafından ayağı kesilerek pes etmiştir. Çiftliğin aşçısı Bell (Emayatzy Corinealdi) ile evlenir ve Kizzy (Anika Noni Rose) adında bir kız çocuğu olur. Yaşama yeniden bağlanan Kunta Kinte'nin kahramanlıkları nesilden nesile ulaşır. Tennessee'de yaşayan Alex Haley (Laurence Fishburne) ile yolları kesişir ve Alex Kunta Kinte ismini tüm dünyaya duyurur. Onun soyundan gelen bir kaç jenerasyon acısı ve tatlısı ile izleyiciye aktarılmaktadır.
