这是NHK的第56部大河剧。时值战国，群雄割据，战火纷飞，掠夺不断，是个混乱不堪的时代。有位女子勇猛果断地投入了时代洪流之中，顶着勇猛的男子之名与男子拼杀，她便是拥有“女地头”称呼的井伊家女性家主——井伊直虎。 由于井伊家当主在桶狭间之战中战死，继任家主又惨遭处死，家中已无成年男丁，井伊家仅存的公主身背井伊直虎这一个充满男性气概的名字担起了振兴家族的重任。她的领地被骏河的今川、甲斐的武田、三河的德川三个大国所包围。井伊直虎在伙伴们的帮助下治理领地，亦作为养母，培养了日后成为"德川四天王"之一的名将井伊直政。她辛苦守卫的井伊家，在其后的二百六十年间，一直是支撑江户幕府的顶梁柱
